Winter Plumbing Checklist

1. Insulate Exposed Pipes

Pipe insulation is cheap and effective. Focus on:

• Pipes in unheated areas — Garages, subfloor spaces, roof cavities
• External wall pipes — Especially south-facing walls
• Outdoor pipes — Garden taps and exposed pipework
• Hot water pipes — Insulation reduces heat loss, saving energy and getting hot water to your taps faster

2. Service Your Hot Water System

Your hot water system works hardest in winter. Before the cold sets in:

• Check for visible leaks — Around the base, connections, and valves

3. Fix Dripping Taps and Running Toilets

A dripping outdoor tap in winter can create ice around the tap and pipes, increasing freeze risk. Fix any drips before winter, both for water savings and freeze prevention.

4. Clear Gutters and Downpipes

Blocked gutters overflow and can direct water against walls and foundations. In cold weather, this water can freeze and cause damage. Clear leaves and debris from gutters and ensure downpipes are flowing freely.

5. Check Outdoor Drainage

Ensure outdoor drains are clear of leaves and debris. Heavy winter rain combined with blocked drains leads to flooding and waterlogging around your property.

6. Know Your Emergency Shut-Off

Make sure everyone in the household knows where the main water shut-off valve is and how to use it. If a pipe does burst in winter, being able to shut off the water quickly minimises damage.

7. Disconnect Garden Hoses

Leaving a hose connected to an outdoor tap in freezing conditions can cause water to back up and freeze inside the tap and connected pipe. Disconnect hoses and drain them before winter.

What to Do If Pipes Freeze

If you suspect frozen pipes (no water coming from a tap, or only a trickle):

1. Don’t panic — Frozen pipes aren’t an emergency until they burst
2. Leave the affected tap open — This relieves pressure as ice melts
3. Apply gentle heat — Use a hairdryer, hot water bottles, or towels soaked in warm water on the frozen section
4. Never use an open flame — No blowtorches, heaters with open elements, or naked flames near pipes
5. Check for cracks — Once thawed, inspect the pipe for any damage. Even small cracks will leak

If you can’t locate the frozen section or if a pipe has burst, call a plumber immediately.

• Don’t turn the thermostat up beyond 60°C — It’s unnecessary and wastes energy
• Shorter pipe runs — If renovating, keep hot water pipes as short as possible to reduce heat loss

• Consider a continuous flow system — Tankless systems provide endless hot water regardless of demand
